During the turmoil and chaos of 2020. Julian Lennon has officially changed its name – and few people may have noticed. “It was 2020, right before we were all locked in a cage, when I finally decided to legally change my default name,” Julian, a 59-year-old singer-songwriter, said on the July 13 episode. A word in the ear podcast The son of the deceased John Lennon said he changed his name to Julian Lennon. “My original name was ‘John Charles Julian Lennon,'” he said, “and all the crap I had to deal with on the trips, and the security companies, and this, and that, and that.”
“Whenever you’ve had to introduce yourself, especially on boarding passes like this, just as an example, you know they only use your name and so it’s always ‘John Lennon, John Lennon,'” he continued (p/ t PEOPLE.) “So I became very scared and anxious about these scenarios because there were always quirks or jokes and most of the time people didn’t even recognize me. So it became very awkward over the years because I was always known as Julian, so it never felt like it was me. Finally, in 2020, I decided, “Yes, now I want to be me.” That’s it, it’s time for a change.”
This move was in no way a way for him to humiliate his father his mother, Cynthia Powell. “I want to respect my parents’ legacy and wishes, but all I’ve done is change ‘John’ and ‘Julian’ so I’m Julian Charles John Lennon,” he added. “It’s so simple, but it’s a whole different world to me, it really is. Not that I’m ashamed or disrespected. I needed to be myself. I needed to finally be heard as Julian. That’s what Julian does, not ‘John’s son,’ so that was part of the journey, and … it made sense to me.”
Julian was on the road to coming to terms with his father’s legacy and how it affected his life. In April, Julian, who had a Top 10 hit in 1984 with “Too Late For Goodbyes,” performed “Imagine” for the first time at the Global Citizen Stand Up for Ukraine benefit concert. Julian wrote in the description of a YouTube video of his performance that “the only time I would ever consider singing ‘IMAGINE’ would be the end of the world.”
The positive reaction to the performance changed Julian’s view of being John Lennon’s son. “I feel, probably for the first time in history, that I can walk without fear, with my head held high,” he said in an interview The iHeartRadio Podcast Inside the studio (h/t PEOPLE). “I think I’ve laid the foundation on a lot of levels for what I do, and I’m proud to be doing everything I’m doing now. So it’s a different world, you know? Now I feel a little grown up… It was magical. It must have been magical the first time.”
