DisneyAvatar: The Last Airbender has surpassed $2 billion at the global box office, becoming the second James Cameron film to reach the milestone.

Only five other films have achieved this feat – the original Avatar, Avengers: Endgame, Cameron’s Titanic, Star Wars: The Force Awakens and Avengers: Infinity War.

As of Sunday, “The Way of Water” has earned $598 million from domestic ticket sales and $1.426 billion from overseas markets. The film is the sixth highest-grossing film of all time and will likely climb the rankings as it continues to run in theaters.

“Now the film has entered this very exclusive box office club and made it look almost effortless,” said Paul Dergarabedian, senior media analyst at Comscore.

The box office has struggled to recover from the pandemic as audiences shifted to watching at home and fewer films hit the big screen. As the industry recovers, movies like The Way of Water have shown that moviegoers are eager to return to big blockbusters. And many are willing to pay for premium screenings IMAX or large format screens, which often have a higher price tag.

Although Waterway had a more muted than expected showing in China as a result of a spike in Covid and hospitalizations due to the virus, it led to strong ticket sales from France, Germany and Korea.

Reaching the $2 billion mark is a good sign for the Avatar franchise, which is slated to release three more installments over the next five years. It’s also in line with a goal set by Cameron, who previously said the film would need to be the third or fourth highest-grossing film of all time to break even.

“Following the trajectory of Cameron’s career as the ‘King of the Box Office,’ it should come as no surprise that the justification for completing the director’s vision of the world of Pandora is now indisputably secured and has received the stamp of approval from an enthusiastic fanbase.” of the globe,” Dergarabedyan said.

It’s unclear what the film’s production budget was, though estimates range from $250 million to $350 million, excluding marketing costs.

Waterway should continue to pull in at the box office as it has no direct competition in theaters until mid-February when Marvel Studios’ Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantum of Solace comes out.
