The US has dramatically reduced its chip sector restrictions in China. This would severely limit China’s ambitions to develop its own advanced semiconductor industry, while hurting US companies that sell chips or semiconductor equipment to the country.
Biden administration on Friday introduced some of the most extensive restrictions for the export of semiconductors to China. Rather than targeting only certain companies like Huawei, the new restrictions would require US companies to obtain licenses to export certain chips used in artificial intelligence and supercomputers, as well as equipment used in advanced semiconductor manufacturing.
