DETROIT – General Motors the future may be in all-electric vehicles, but it still needs modern models to pay the bills to allow investment in these new products.

That’s one reason the automaker revealed Tuesday 2024 Chevrolet Corvette E-Ray – the first ever “electrified” or hybrid version of the famous sports car. It also has all-wheel drive, another first for the eighth-generation, or C8, Corvette.

The car — starting at $104,000 when it launches later this year — may surprise some consumers as it’s a step toward full electrification, but it’s a unicorn in GM’s lineup. The Detroit automaker has discontinued all hybrids, including plug-in hybrids, to focus on investment in all-electric vehicles.

So why make a hybrid Corvette? GM says there are several reasons, but overall the automaker was already developing the technology ahead of its more aggressive EV ambitions. It’s also a new market that should help the company test electrification for the iconic car.

“It’s just a new market opportunity for us as a company to showcase our engineering and our development of the entire C8 architecture,” said GM President Mark Reuss. CNBC’s Phil LeBeau. “General Motors and Chevrolet Continue to Increase Deliveries for Corvette Customers.”

Royce last year confirmed an all-electric Corvette is comingbut GM has not announced a timeline for the EV version.

The C8 features an exclusive Corvette engine and architecture. Almost every GM vehicle shares a common platform, engine, and other features. For example, all GMs full-size trucks and SUVs are on the same platform and have basically the same engines.

“There’s just incredible architecture underneath, and the architecture was planned and designed for quite a few options,” Royce said.

The last GM vehicle to use the modified Corvette architecture was the sixth-generation version of the short-lived Cadillac XLR, which was discontinued in 2009.

“This is just part of our journey to what we’ve talked about before, which is an ‘electrified’ and then an all-electric Corvette, and we’re definitely on our way there,” said Steve Mayoras, Chevrolet vice president of marketing. during a media briefing. “But in the meantime, we have a lot of technological bandwidth that we can still unpack with the Corvette.”

According to Harlan Charles, Chevrolet Corvette marketing manager, the hybrid system was developed specifically for the eighth-generation Corvette. The battery system – a 1.9kWh battery located between the seats – is charged mainly by regenerative energy from coasting and braking, as well as during normal driving.

The system allows the Corvette to start quietly instead of making the sound of a roaring V8, improving acceleration and potentially the car’s fuel economy. GM declined to release the expected mpg for that the regular C8 is 19 mpg combined.

Future all-electric Corvettes could change more than just the car’s drivetrain. Automotive newsciting industry forecasters, it was reported last year that GM is expected to debut an all-electric version of the Corvette SUV around 2025.

A GM spokesman declined to speculate on the Corvette expansion, saying the company had reviewed the reports and “will not engage in speculation.”

At the end of 2019, Morgan Stanley analyst Adam Jonas said that a Corvette sub-brand could be worth $7 billion to $12 billion for the automaker.

GM’s Reuss made it clear that the company is not interested in hybrid electric vehicles, as discontinued Chevrolet Volt in early 2019. He described such vehicles as too expensive to manufacture and as transitional in the push for all-electric cars and trucks.

“There’s no plug-in involved,” Royce said. “It’s a really performance-oriented electrified system.”

In addition to the company abandoning the PHEV, officials said the extra weight of the extra batteries and connected technology would hurt the car’s performance. An all-electric Corvette would be heavier, but would benefit from the near-instant torque and other driving dynamics of an electric car to offset the weight gain.

“The mission of this car was performance, performance and performance,” said Mike Kochiba, Corvette’s lead engineering engineer. “Every kilogram or pound had to earn its way in terms of mass. … It hurt productivity, plain and simple.”
