“I will always be on this show,” the 52-year-old actress said Deadline on Friday, September 9, near her part-time job in season 19. “I’m the executive producer. I spent two decades of my career [Grey’s Anatomy] – this is my heart and soul. I will never be gone as long as [it’s] on the air.”
Pompeo noted this ABC’s hit series will be “just fine without” her because it has found such success since its debut in 2005. The series that was created Shonda Rhimesmine too previously parted ways with longtime cast members including Sandra O, Katherine Heigl, Justin Chambers, T. R. Knight, Isaiah Washington and Patrick Dempsey.
In August it was reported that Pompeo will be filmed in only eight episodes of the upcoming season. The Boston native will focus on her work as host and executive producer an untitled Hulu limited series. The show, inspired by a true story, will explore Christina and Michael Barnettthe experience of adopting an orphan who was later accused of fraud.
“I hope [Grey’s] ventilators [will watch]”, Pompeo added on Friday her first starring role since then Grey’s Anatomy. “I know that there is no guarantee of this. But I’m going to put the same soul and passion into it. It’s only eight little episodes, so it won’t take up too much of your time.”
Ahead of her shocking departure, a nominee for the “Golden Globe”. was honest about moving on. “I feel like I’m super naive who keeps saying, ‘But what’s this story going to be, what story are we going to tell?’ Everyone’s like, “Who cares, Ellen?” It brings in a million dollars,” she said Insider in December 2021.
At the time, Pompeo noted that she was “trying to focus on convincing everybody” that the medical drama is over. The Lunar mile star later hinted that she was considering a way to finish her job as Dr. Meredith Grey.
“Shonda and I, I think we’ll see, we’ll see,” she said Entertainment tonight in May about leaving Grey’s Anatomy. “The challenge at this point is trying to reinvent the show and constantly trying to reinvent the show.”
Pompeo continued: “Look, the show speaks to a lot of people, and young people love the show. It’s inspired so many generations of health professionals, so I think it’s really good content for the youth, and we’re going to try to keep it going for the youth, not necessarily with me, but follow me.”
Grey’s Anatomy Season 19 premieres on ABC on Thursday, October 6 at 9:00 PM ET.
