Google has eliminated more than 1,800 jobs in its home state of California in the largest round of layoffs in the company’s history.
on friday Alphabetowned by Google announced it cut 12,000 employees, roughly 6% of its full-time workforce. According to documents released by the state and seen by CNBC, 1,845 positions, or 15% of the cuts, were in California.
Most of the statewide layoffs have taken place in and around the company’s headquarters in Silicon Valley. About 1,436 jobs were cut in Mountain View, home to Google, and 119 in San Bruno, home to YouTube. Palo Alto saw 53 cuts.
“It is expected that layoffs at the facilities as a result of this action will begin on March 31, 2023,” the statement, dated Jan. 20, said.
A Google spokesperson told CNBC that the March date is related to the notice period required in California. WARN (Worker Adjustment and Retraining Act) compels employers to give affected employees and state and local officials at least 60 days’ written notice “of any plant closing or mass layoff.”
Initial Google announcement said the company would pay US employees “for the full notice period (minimum 60 days)”.
More than a quarter of the affected Bay Area roles had “director” or “senior” in their titles. The cuts also included 27 full-time massage therapists, including 24 in Mountain View and three in the Southern California markets of Los Angeles and Irvine.
A total of 177 cuts occurred in Los Angeles, mostly at the company’s Playa Vista campus. Irvine had 60 cuts.
Alphabet is considered at risk of a slowdown and recession as the technology market adjusts to the end of a long bull market. On a company-wide meeting on Monday, CEO Sundar Pichai addressed layoffs while answering questions from employees who expressed concerns about the future.
“I understand that you are worried about what will happen next with your work,” Pichai said at the meeting. “Also very sad about the loss of some really good colleagues across the company.”
