GroupM will account for 19% of global retail sales in 2022, reaching 25% by 2027

E-commerce will account for 19 percent of global retail sales this year, rising to 25 percent by 2027, according to New York-based investment firm GroupM. The top twenty e-commerce companies accounted for 67 percent of global e-commerce sales last year. Global media retail sales will reach $101 billion in 2022, up 15 percent from a year ago, and reach $160 billion in annual revenue five years from now.

Over the next one to three years, retail media is likely to see increased competition, more frequent separation of data from inventory and greater involvement of non-endemic brands, the company said.

In 2021, the top twenty e-commerce companies accounted for 67 percent of global e-commerce sales. Global media retail sales will reach $101 billion in 2022—up 15 percent from 2021—and reach $160 billion in annual revenue by 2027.

The company’s model estimates global e-commerce sales at $5.4 trillion this year. China and the United States alone will account for 52 percent of that figure, and nearly 61 percent of the total, $3.3 trillion, can be attributed to just seven markets: the United States, China, Japan, Germany, the United Kingdom, Canada and Australia.

The company estimates that e-commerce sales will reach $9.1 trillion by 2027. This figure includes sales of automobiles and auto parts, as well as gasoline, but excludes food and beverage services to make like-for-like comparisons across all tracked markets.

E-commerce is projected to account for 19 percent of global retail sales in 2022, up from 18 percent in 2021 and 2020.

Unsurprisingly, Chinese retailers are three of the top five retailers by global gross merchandise value (GMV), with Amazon and eBay rounding out the other two spots (although Shopify would replace eBay in fifth place if included).

Alibaba is the undisputed leader and has more than twice the e-commerce GMV of number two, Amazon, GroupM added.

Sales from third-party sellers have grown rapidly as a percentage of Amazon’s GMV, and GroupM estimates that this ratio will reach 65 percent in 2021.
