Mexican prosecutors seek extradition to US of suspect in North Carolina woman’s slaying in San Jose del Cabo

Mexican prosecutors said Thursday they have indicted an American woman on suspicion of murdering another American they saw him being beaten in a viral video.

The Baja California State Attorney’s Office has not named a suspect in the Oct. 29 death of Shankella Robinson.

But they said they had reached out to Mexican federal prosecutors and diplomats to try to extradite the woman to face charges in Mexico.

Robinson’s death at a resort in Baja San Jose del Cabo shocked people in both countries. The video raised suspicions that Robinson may have died at the hands of the people she was traveling with.

Local prosecutor Antonio Lopez Rodríguez said the case is being treated as a potential homicide and an arrest warrant has been issued for the suspect. However, the group Robinson was traveling with left Mexico after she was found dead in a rented villa.

State Attorney Daniel de la Rosa Anaya said the suspect is also American, but did not identify her.

FBI confirmed to CBS News An inquest into Robinson’s death was also opened on Tuesday.

The video, apparently recorded at a luxury villa in San Jose del Cabo, shows one woman, apparently American, beating another woman, identified as Robinson.

The video was repeatedly reposted on social networks. On it, a man with an American accent is heard saying, “Are you even fighting back?” It seems that the man did not intervene in the beating.

The video raised questions about why no one intervened in the alleged beating, or why the people she was riding with would beat her up.

Shankella’s mother, Salamondra Robinson, told CBS News last week that Shankella’s friends initially told her that Shankella had suffered from alcohol poisoning. But Salamondra later learned that a fight had taken place and an autopsy revealed she had spinal cord and neck injuries.

An autopsy showed “her death was not alcohol-related,” Salamondra said.
