NARAL CALLS OUT AD MAILER IN AD-40

Is Assemblywoman Suzette Valladares, R-Santa Clarita, pro-reproductive rights?

The Republican assemblywoman, locked in a heated race with Democrat Pilar Schiavo, voted in favor of sending Proposition 1 (the ballot measure enshrining a right to an abortion in the California Constitution) to voters.

However, she voted against other abortion-related bills, including AB 2223, which shields pregnant people from criminal investigations into pregnancy outcomes in the event of a miscarriage, stillbirth or self-managed abortion.

A recent mailer sent to Assembly District 40 voters, paid for by the California Medical Association and the California Apartment Association, describes Valladares as supportive of reproductive freedom.

NARAL Pro-Choice California begs to differ.

“To be crystal clear, Valladares earned an ‘F’ on NARAL Pro-Choice California’s Reproductive Freedom Legislative Scorecard,” said Shannon Olivieri Hovis, NARAL Pro-Choice California director. “The mail piece is dangerous and entirely misrepresentative of Valladares’ dismal record on reproductive freedom.”

The abortion rights group has endorsed Schiavo.

CHEN RELEASES SPANISH-LANGUAGE AD TARGETING COHEN

Republican California Controller candidate Lanhee Chen — fresh off of a debate with an empty podium because his Democratic opponent Malia Cohen, who chairs the California Board of Equalization, turned down an offer to appear — has released a Spanish-language ad slamming Cohen’s personal financial history.

The ad, “Un Desastre,” points out that Cohen lost both a business license and her home.

“‘Un Desastre’ highlights Malia Cohen’s record of financial failure,” Chen said in a statement. “The Controller is supposed to be the state’s independent fiscal watchdog and CFO, yet Malia can’t even manage her own finances. Californians deserve better.”
