Russia held a Victory Day military parade on Monday to mark the 77th anniversary of the Soviet Union’s defeat in Nazi Germany in World War II.

More than 65,000 people out of 2,400 weapons and logistics were expected to take part.

This year’s parade is taking place against the backdrop of Russia’s unprovoked invasion of neighboring Ukraine, which killed thousands and fled more than 5 million.

The invasion has sparked international condemnation and a series of broad economic sanctions against key sectors of the country, companies and individuals associated with the Kremlin.
