Zund’s Heat Seal Module (HSM) won the Unsurpassed Innovation Award at the recent CAMX 2022 Composites and Advanced Materials Show in Anaheim, California. HSM facilitates handling and handling of dry fibrous materials containing thermoplastics. This new tool helps in easier processing of these types of materials.

The American Composites Manufacturing Association, ACMA, named HSM the winner of the ACE Award for Outstanding Innovation in the Manufacturing: Equipment and Tooling category. This award is given annually to equipment, tools, production aids or software designed to improve manufacturing, environmental sustainability or product quality and performance in composites manufacturing, according to a company news release.

During the processing process, dry fiber materials tend to fray at the edges. Using hot air, the HSM seals the fabric along the cut path before it is cut by the Zünd Power Rotary Tool – PRT. Thanks to this sealing process, the cut can be made at full speed in any direction, resulting in both higher quality parts and greater production efficiency.

HSM helps create clean, sealed edges when cutting fiber-reinforced thermoplastic composites. This benefits not only the cutting process itself, but also other manufacturing processes. Cutting in this way leaves no loose or uncut fibers and maintains a clean cutting surface and uncontaminated production environment. At the same time, it guarantees that the cut parts retain their shape, and this increased stability makes them much easier to handle, especially in fully automated manufacturing workflows.
